Recommendations to buy professional snorkeling equipment

Buy professional snorkel equipment It is something simple to do with good judgment thanks to these tips on each product of your snorkeling equipment. If you are going to travel to the Yucatan peninsula, I recommend you bring your snorkeling equipment because hundreds of cenotes and the fantastic Mexican Caribbean await you.

If you are going to travel to a good snorkeling spot like the Mexican Caribbean and Yucatan, we recommend bringing your own mask and the rest of the snorkeling equipment. In the boat tours at sea they offer a mask, also in most cenotes they rent a mask.

The fins are not so necessary to bring them to travel in many cases. Let's see what we recommend you bring from snorkeling equipment to the trip. To do this, I am going to explain my snorkeling and water equipment, and how and why I do my shopping.

  • I don't like having a lot of material things. I buy very little, and if I don't need to replenish I try not to buy more.
  • I like to buy good quality for several reasons: good quality is more comfortable and I know that if I take good care of it it will last me a long time. I have pants and other mountain clothes from more than 17 years ago and I still use them regularly.
  • When there is a brand that works for me, I don't change. And the typical brands that begin to vary the quality of the product, I change them immediately (if they gave good quality and lower it, it seems somewhat ugly).
  • The name of the brands does not matter to me, I look for quality.
  • I look for good prices, I like to save money.

WHERE TO BUY PROFESSIONAL SNORKEL EQUIPMENT

We describe the importance of each product for buy professional snorkel equipment with discretion. There are products that you should consider several things, as well as the correct care of the snorkeling equipment.

There are products that you know and it is easy to buy them online. For the masks I recommend you try it in a store if you do not know it, it is essential that they fit you well. There are shops specialized in diving and snorkeling equipment. Sports stores have a diving and snorkelling department.

HOW TO CHOOSE SNORKEL MASK

Having good snorkel mask it is the most basic. If during snorkeling you are constantly putting on the mask, it is a burden. My advice is that you try on the mask and feel if it is yours in a store. We explain how to choose your snorkel mask ideal. Between choosing a snorkel mask or a mask for diving there would be small variations when choosing. That's why here we only talk about snorkel mask.

There are two basic questions: choosing the right size and material of the mask for an ideal snorkeling equipment.

  • SNORKEL MASK: basic piece of snorkeling equipment that will basically allow you to have a good or bad snorkel. This is how fundamental the mask is, so read the recommendations well.
  • HOW TO CHOOSE THE SIZE OF YOUR SNORKEL MASK WELL? There is the typical test to choose the size that suits your face: it consists of trying on the mask, inhaling through the nose and that with the face facing the ground the mask does not fall, it is well fastened. Finally, make sure that the mask does not cover your lip. Adjust the mask to your face and feel how it feels, see if you can pinch your nose easily, if it does not catch your lip or the hair on the side and forehead. The one that meets all these characteristics will be your ideal size.
  • WHAT MATERIAL SHOULD MY SNORKEL MASK BE MADE OF? The other issue is the material, which can be tempered glass or plastic. I definitely choose tempered glass because it is more difficult to scratch and fog up much less. And the part that covers the glass that is fixed on your face must be silicone, not plastic. It fits much better.
  • HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SNORKEL MASK? Rinse the snorkel equipment well with fresh water after each use, this is essential, especially after swimming in salt water. Store them in their box so that insects that eat silicone do not annoy your snorkel mask. And away from direct sunlight.
  • WHAT ELSE TO KNOW ABOUT THE SNORKEL MASK? There are lenses that you can graduate in case you don't wear contact lenses. The lenses are fully compatible with snorkeling and diving.

For snorkeling, a single glass gives a broader view.

To have a better view while snorkeling, my mask is made of silicone and tempered glass, with a single glass and with an enlarged visor on the sides. With a tube because for me it is essential. There are several models, from 20 euros onwards. Remember the recommended details and choose yours. This was my pick.

A good anti-fog spray so that they do not mist does not hurt. We know the trick of spitting in the glasses and cleaning the inside, but if you are not convinced, apply about 5 minutes before swimming, 1 or 2 sprays on each lens inside, and rinse slightly in a maximum of 2 minutes.

DO YOU PREFER THE FULL SNORKEL MASK?

The full snorkel mask is not suitable for all types of snorkeling swim. If you are diving or diving at vertical angles, the full mask will not work for you. If you are going to do pure recreational snorkeling, just observe, it is a perfect snorkel mask. The wide field of view is a fantastic window. The comfort of breathing through the nose is another plus. Also, people with mustaches and beards are not a problem to adjust the mask. These full snorkel masks do not slip.

The snorkel tube has a valve that closes when it is put under water. When you are with the tube under the water you cannot breathe, exhale strongly as if you were diving without a mask.

WHAT ELSE TO KNOW ABOUT THE COMPLETE SNORKEL MASK? Too large a mask lets water in and all the positive effects are lost. When in doubt it is better to buy the smallest mask.

In the end it is a personal preference but it is good to have options to choose the snorkeling equipment.

If you are going to practice pure contemplation snorkeling without vertical dives, the 180 degree mask is really the best there is by far. For those who find it difficult to breathe through the tube, this full mask is ideal. Amazon usually has a good deal on these skins.

HOW TO CHOOSE FINS SNORKELING

To snorkel, fins are not necessary. The fins basically help you propel faster, and you tire less thanks to this less effort. A snorkel fin is made up of a pedestal and a paddle. The features give you a more flexible or stiffer snorkel fin. A good fin facilitates propulsion without stiffness, but can cause cramps.

In principle all fins are suitable for snorkelling. On the contrary, some fins are not suitable for diving. In the sea tours by boat they offer you snorkel fins to do the activity. The important thing is that they fit the foot so that you do not lose them with any movement.

We are going to see the basic questions to choose your snorkel fins well.

  • SNORKEL FINS: not essential in your travel gear. The diving fin has an average length between 55 and 75 cm. This is a compelling reason not to take your fins on the trip, if you are not going to dive.
  • HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SNORKEL FINS WELL? The blade must be firm in length and flexible in width. On the sides of the blade there are vertical edges that ensure extra strength and better propulsion. The best models have rubber strips or channels along the length of the blades that make the fins even more flexible. The foot should not come off the pedestal easily, not too tight. In some ways it is the same as the feeling of a firm and comfortable grip with a street shoe. It is usually the same foot size. It does not matter if the foot is the right or the left, they do the same.
  • WHAT MATERIAL SHOULD MY SNORKEL FINS BE OF? The most common material is rubber. The more expensive fins can be made of fiberglass, carbon fiber, or a combination of both. The advantage of these materials is that they are lighter.
  • HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SNORKEL FINS? Rinse snorkel gear well with fresh water after each use. This is essential, especially after swimming in salt water. Store the fins out of direct sunlight, horizontally and without weight on top to avoid deforming them.
  • WHAT ELSE TO KNOW ABOUT SNORKEL FINS? Adjustable fins are usually more expensive. Water socks can help to put on the diving fins. For children you can buy a larger number and use a neoprene sock, they last longer.

Snorkel fins

In my case, as I don't do big dives, short fins, ideal for traveling, serve me more than well. I recommend them without a doubt.

HOW TO CHOOSE SNORKEL TUBE

The snorkel tube attaches to the left side of the diving mask.

  • SNORKEL TUBE: it gives you a very good comfort for snorkeling, I recommend taking it on a trip.
  • HOW TO CHOOSE THE SNORKEL TUBE WELL? The length of a snorkel tube varies between 35 to 45 centimeters. The inside diameter is between 1,9 and 2,5 centimeters. For children there are smaller snorkel tubes in length and diameter. There are some with a purge valve to drain the water that enters easily by exhaling briefly and forcefully.
  • WHAT MATERIAL MUST BE TUBE SNORKEL? The most common material is silicone.
  • HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SNORKEL TUBE? Rinse snorkel gear thoroughly with fresh water after each use. This is essential, especially after swimming in salt water. Store the tube out of direct sunlight, and protected from possible silicone-eating insects.
  • WHAT ELSE TO KNOW ABOUT SNORKEL TUBE? There are also (dry) snorkels with a mechanism at the top to ensure that water cannot enter the snorkel tube. With this, once above the water, you can continue breathing without first having to empty the snorkel.

HOW TO CHOOSE WATER SOCKS, WATER SHOES OR SOCKS

Water socks and other types are used in snorkeling to protect the foot, walk comfortably to the dive site, more grip on slippery surfaces and prevent cold. Buy your booties at a dive store or online if you know the size. Bring your diving fins when you go to try on the booties.

There are diving boots, but we consider this footwear only for diving, not for snorkeling equipment.

  • WATER SOCKS FOR SNORKELING EQUIPMENT: socks are enough to snorkel in Caribbean waters. If used with snorkel fins the feet feel well supported and protected, and blisters are avoided. These thin socks from cressi are made of neoprene and are perfect to put on your fins or diving boots. They cost 17,89 euros and come in a universal size, for everyone.
  • WATER SHOES FOR SNORKEL EQUIPMENT: the big difference with water shoes or surf shoes is the sole of these. They protect the sole of your foot on steep surfaces and on shell beaches. The Cressi Nouema has a sole made of a non-slip material with a high coefficient of friction. They are also easy to put on and take off. Pedilos for 11,95 euros.
  • SOCKS FOR SNORKEL EQUIPMENT: designed to go with fins. The solidity and thickness of the sole is an important characteristic to take into account when buying. The low (below the ankle), flexible and slim (up to 3mm) models are used for snorkelling and diving in warm waters such as the Caribbean (over 24 degrees Celsius). 1–2 mm = 24 degrees / 3 mm = 21 to 27 degrees / 4–5mm - 16 to 21 degrees / 6 - 7 mm - 10 to 16 degrees.

I like wearing rubber wellies with my adaptable fins. They help me to walk safely thanks to the thick sole, they are non-slip, and they protect me from possible sores on my feet, especially if I have not practiced for a long time.

The Keen have been my choice of footwear for years when I go to the coast or cenotes area. The same for hiking through the jungle and river crossings, with some water socks, they are perfect for me. They can get wet and have a robust hiking sole. Very highly recommended, I love them.

WHAT SPECIAL LYCRA FOR WATER USE

If in the creams we must look at the SPF in the clothes we must look at the UPF (Ultraviolet Protecting Factor). It is what measures the amount of UV radiation that it is capable of blocking. It is not mandatory to label it on clothing, although more and more is being done. Good water shirts should carry the UPF factor

The clothes themselves protect us from the sun. The difference between a dark cotton T-shirt and the same T-shirt but with UPF incorporated is not much: the first has a UPF of 40 or 50 and the second of 75. Keep in mind that a wet garment protects half that if it is dry which is why water jerseys dry very quickly. (Source Jose Aguilera Arjona).

T-shirts with UPF are designed to be comfortable for the beach, playing sports, and they dry very quickly. To understand us: with a black cotton shirt, you may be protecting yourself from the sun just as with a water shirt, but the water shirt is much more comfortable.

  • WATER T-SHIRT: I totally recommend it in your luggage. It is what protects you the most from the sun, a good water shirt is the solution for the sun and the cold.
  • HOW TO CHOOSE RIGHT WATER T-SHIRT? White is the least protective color. Darker colors protect more.
  • WHAT MATERIAL MUST THE WATER T-SHIRT BE MADE OF? very tight fabrics such as synthetics or cotton protect more than linen, which is very fresh but lets radiation through.
  • HOW TO CARE FOR THE WATER T-SHIRT? Rinse the shirt well after each use, especially if you have been in salt water or chlorine.
  • WHAT ELSE TO KNOW ABOUT WATER T-SHIRT? In my case, I always wear long sleeves to protect my whole body. I trust a good shirt a lot more than sunscreen.

WHAT AQUATIC CHAMBER BUY NOW

I have used several water cameras and the one that I have enjoyed the most has been the Go Pro. To capture the actions it is a cool both in dry and in water, it is easy to handle, its wide angle gives you a different vision due to the width of the plane . It is really an all-rounder, and they have been improving the product. For us it is a great toy.

There are several types, any questions to choose from you tell us. Always remember, as with your snorkeling equipment, wash the camera well with fresh water and protect it from sunlight and moisture when storing it. If you don't use it for a while, you better remove the batteries.

WHICH BIODEGRADABLE SUNSCREEN IS BEST TO BUY

Without being a big fan of sunscreens and sunblocks, we do recommend some that are obviously biodegradable. With this small gesture we can make a difference, it is proven that non-biodegradable products negatively affect the environment.

Personally, I hardly use sunscreen, I prefer to go covered with long sleeves, a water shirt in the cenotes and the sea, long pants and a hat. It protects me more, I'm sure of it. I am one of my little sun baths like a lizard when I wake up or close the sun cycle, but at low sun hours.

Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before exposure, and reapplied every two hours while in the sun. Pay special attention to sensitive areas of the face such as nose, eyelids, lips, décolleté, chest, shoulders, instep).

  • WHEN IS A PRODUCT BIODEGRADABLE? They are biodegradable if they are made with totally natural, non-polluting materials and can be destroyed by microorganisms.
  • HOW TO KNOW IF A SUNSCREEN IS BIODEGRADABLE? The most essential advice to know if a sunscreen is biodegradable that it does not have oxybenzone (you can also find it as 'oxybenzone' or 'benzophenone-3'). It is the ingredient harmful to both humans and the environment. Anything that contains the following is not a biodegradable sunscreen: Octinoxate (Octinoxate) / Nanoparticles of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide ('zinc oxide' and 'titanium dioxide' in English.
