History of the temple and former convent of Santo Domingo de Uayma
This place was one of the first temples used for evangelization by the Franciscans. The encomendero Juan Vellido tells in his chronicles about the 1579 that the church was made with stones from Mayan mounds found in the town. It was a common practice to build the new Catholic churches with the stones of the ancient Mayan cities, the evangelizing footprint modified the historical landscape in an overwhelming way.
Fray Diego de Cogolludo in his history of Yucatán says that Uayma was the head of doctrine since the first stage of construction was ready in 1581 (Source). According to the inscription found in the access portal, the temple and convent were completed in the year 1642.
The most striking thing about this temple of Yucatecan viceregal architecture are the ajaracas, ornaments that dress the temple in a flirtatious way, like no other in the Peninsula. We see these enhancements both on the façade and inside. Visually visiting the temple and former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán de Uayma is really entertaining.
During the known as War of Castes (1847-1901) the temple was burned, like many other temples. In fact there are many temples in the Peninsula that are fallen but are still used to celebrate Masses. I like that, if you populate the Yucatan Peninsula you'll see them in several places. Uayma was restored in its entirety in the 2005 year.
Uayma We like it so much that from time to time we just peek in, to give ourselves that visual taste. More if it is in the afternoon, when the sun illuminates the facade of the temple, and we take the opportunity to take a picture.
On the last occasion we toured the town more slowly, and found some odd treasure to stay at. Being curious takes you to the best places.
