History Palacio Cantón de Mérida

The Canton Palace was the family home of the General Francisco Cantón Rosado. It was built on the new Paseo de Montejo in 1904 until 1911. The building has a type of Frenchified o neofrancés, sought to emulate the magnificence of the palaces of Europe. It was devised by an Italian architect and built by an architect nephew of the Canton family. In the building we find an interesting room with documentation and history of the Palace.

From the first decade of the 20th century until 1932 it was a family residence, until the Canton family sold the building to the government of Yucatán. Since then the Palacio Cantón has hosted different cultural proposals. In 1959 it became the Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatan, and since 1980 permanent exhibitions on Mayan themes have been held. That's how I met it, it was a museum with many Mayan pieces, one of the best in the entire Peninsula.

In the year 2012 changed again, since its greater number of Mayan pieces were taken to the Great Mayan Museum of Merida. This museum is now the reference for lovers of pre-Hispanic cultures and history, a very complete museum with admirable pieces of the Mayan world. In the Canton Palace you still find temporary exhibitions of Mayan theme.

Look at the program before visiting it at Canton Palace website to see if you are interested or not visit the place. I recommend it without a doubt, the building is beautiful and it is interesting to see the documentation of the house when it was built, with invoices and salaries of the time. I tell you, a window to the past very interesting.
