The building was built between 1573 and 1579, by order of Fray Diego de Landa, being the archiepiscopal palace. It has been occupied for different purposes, before in 1991 it was transformed into a museum. An engraving on its façade indicates that it was an Athenaeum in 1916, where music, literature and drawing classes were taught.

The 15 temporary rooms of the current Fernando García Ponce Museum, they are the headquarters of works of national and international artists.
