Within the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is the coastal town of Las Coloradas, a place with an irresistible charm thanks to its pink colors of the ponds of the salt mine.
It is impossible to hide the tourist charm of The Coloradas, a beautiful town of 1068 inhabitants located in the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. The reddish landscapes derived from its salt mines, the desert vegetation that decorates the coast, the attractive pink flamingos, the whites of the beaches together with the fabulous turquoise of the sea of the Gulf of Mexico paint one of my favorite landscapes of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Coloradas It is very beautiful.

VISIT COLORADAS:
The Coloradas It is the town with the least tourist infrastructure of those found within the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. This small coastal town with a beautiful beach conquered by fishing boats, has the largest salt industry in the Yucatan Peninsula. Families of fishermen and workers of the salt works give life to this quiet town that receives passing tourism.
We know the area well because we work in the area from 2007, we hope to help you on your trip 🙂
THE PINK WATERS OF LAS COLORADAS:
The visitor who approaches The Coloradas He is attracted by the landscapes of the beautiful and extensive pink waters, the salinera locks, one of the most important salt processing plants in Mexico. Being able to visit these salt flats is a joy of warm colors fused with the blue of the sky. You will see that the different locks vary the color of the water according to the level of salt processing: the more salt, the more colored the water. You can get on the dirt roads that run through the salt flats, what you can never do is get on them. Respect the indications of the place and enjoy the landscape.
One of the pleasant surprises that these salt flats have in store are the community of pink flamingos that gather here, especially from the months of April and May. The pink flamingo is the great tourist attraction of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, being Río Lagartos the place where more excursions depart to observe them. So you know, in The Coloradas You also have the opportunity to see flamingos on your own.

BEST TIME TO VISIT THE COLORADAS
The best time is given regarding the pink color in its maximum splendor, which is at the hours of the sun at its zenith. That is between 12 and 15 hours, depending on summer or winter time. The higher the sun is, the more alive we see the pink. At dusk and dawn the pink colors are not so intense.
Another fact to take into account: the pink lagoon is part of a salt factory, once or twice a year this lock is emptied where we tourists come to take a photo. It is possible that during your visit the color of the water will be more or less pink depending on how long the water has been stagnant. I can't give you a fixed schedule for emptying the lagoon because there isn't one (for reference: in 2018 they emptied it in August). Anyway, if they empty it, the guides will take you to another pink lock with the permission of the salinera.
WHAT MORE TO DO IN LAS COLORADAS?
The beach of Las Coloradas: the town has one of the best beaches on this coast, a plus of charm without a doubt. Extensive white sand beaches accompanied by turquoises of the sea, fishing boats in front of the sea, and pelicans, frigates, herons and seagulls create the delicious landscape of the coast of Las Coloradas, with a deep flavor of salt. These beaches come to spawn from May to November 3 marine species of turtles, the hawksbill, the white and the loggerhead. Its beaches were declared a Sea Turtle Protection Zone by the Federal Government in October 1986 and are recognized as a Sanctuary.
Cancunito Beach: road to River Lagartos There is one of the beaches where the place usually escapes. The services offered have had better times and the beach is dirty, but you find your corner and you get caught with colors.
The powerful salt industry makes it a place of passage, with few options to stay and a restaurant to eat. The Coloradas Without hesitation it deserves a detour on your way, its landscapes will make you fall in love, believe me.

The Coloradas, nature

Hello! Next week I will be visiting the coloradas, holbox and I think that nothing else, what do you recommend that I use to transport myself and the lodging that there is more to do nearby? regards! And thanks :)))
Hi Claudia, the cheapest way to get around in that area is the Northeast bus (the company that provides the most services in that area), which are based in Tizimín. From this town, trucks and buses leave for the villages of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. Las Coloradas has little lodging, where there are more options is Río Lagartos, which is close to you. In Río Lagartos they offer different excursions to visit the area, just like in Holbox, where just walking around the island is your time. Another beautiful town in the area is El Cuyo.
Enjoy your trip very much, kind regards.
Hi Sandra, I really liked the information, very parents too your photos ... congratulations!
I'm planning to go to Merida next November, do you think it's a good date to find the rose in the reds? and to appreciate the flamingos?
Thank you
Hi Guillermo, thank you very much for the comment. Sure you can see the pink waters, even when they empty the main sluice the local guides have permission from the salt mine to take tourists to other ponds, so no problem. There are other peak times better for flamenco watching, but in November they look the same. Enjoy the destination, if you want me to recommend a local guide or any other information you write to us and we pass the contact and support.
Good trip,
Thank you! 😀
Yes, could you recommend a guide?
Do you know any in Celestún?
Hi Guillermo, I send you the phone number of a local guide who can receive you in Las Coloradas. In Celestún we also know, depending on what you are looking for. We are certified nature guides, and we have colleagues in several destinations, so it costs nothing to recommend. Now we speak by mail.
Best regards,
Good evening, Sandra, what is the route from Valladolid to Colorado and from Colorado to Cancun? I appreciate your collaboration as always.
Hello Juaco, happy to help you, you know? From Valladolid to Las Coloradas you have about an hour and a half by road. Back to Cancun put two and a half hours. You can return by the toll road or the free one from Valladolid to Cancun. 276 weights the section from Valladolid to Cancun.
Best regards,
Hello, what is the easiest way to get to Las Coloradas from Mérida?
Hello Celic, it would be to go to Tizimin by the road of Motul, and from Tizimin you take the road to Rio Lagartos, before arriving at Rio Lagartos there is the well-marked detour to Las Coloradas. Calculate 3 hours and 15 by car. By public transport you must go to Tizimin and from here combis to Las Coloradas.
Greetings, good trip!
Good afternoon Sandra, I'm planning a trip to Bacalar, Holbox and Colorado but I do not know what route to take to save money and make the most of the time that you could help me over there
Hello Cintia, are you going by public transport or by private car?
Hello Sandra, planned a trip to know Holbox, the Colorado, Mahahual and Bacalar. Starting from Cancun by car, what route do you recommend?
Hello Ana, from Cancun to Holbox, take the free road towards Leona Vicario to Nuevo Valladolid, there take the detour to Holbox. Better by here than by the toll road, it is well indicated. Holbox to Las Coloradas by inland road race well your route in the apa, has no loss, the roads are secondary. From there to Mahahaual you have a good stretch, there are several ways to get there, according to your pace and your idea of travel.
Regards,
Good day 🙂 I would like you to give me a tip, I want to go to chichen valladolid and las coloradas ... if there is a way to make the trip like this in a truck or I can only do it in a paricular car .. help!
Hello Maria, good day!
You can go by bus, van or taxi, there are public transport options for most tourist places in the Peninsula. What I did not understand if you go on the same day to all places and from where. Depending on where you come from, the panorama changes for a matter of time.
You already tell me, greetings.
I leave Merida, do you think it is very complicated to do the tour in 1 day?
Hi Maria, it's a bit crowded on public transport, but if you feel like it, give it! It would be to leave Mérida in ADO in the truck of the 6: 30, you are in Chichén to the 8: 30. From there combis pass through Piste that takes you to Valladolid (you're like half an hour from Valladolid). From Valladolid I combi to Tizimn (that is like 45 minutes) and from there to Las Coloradas (this section is the least traveled and less services, there is about an hour and a little bit). Return to Tizimín and from there to Mérida in the Northeast (there is no ADO). You can agree with a taxi from Tizimín round trip price to Las Coloradas.
Greetings, good way!
Hello Sandra!! How about a favorsote you can tell me how to go from playa del carmen to las coloradas, I will go by truck or combi? por favor!! thank you
Hello Adriana, from Playa the truck leaves to Tizimín, I do not know what times or where they come from in Playa, I recommend you go to the ADO central or call them. There are not many a day. And from Tizimín to Las Coloradas by direct taxi or to Río Lagartos and from there to Las Coloradas, all in combi or van. The next time I went through Tizimín, I informed directly with the taxi drivers and van drivers to go and put it more precisely, so I completed the info that we were somewhat lame.
I found this, in case it helps: https://www.rome2rio.com/es/s/Playa-del-Carmen/Las-Coloradas-Yucatán-México
Greetings, good way!
Hello Sandra:
I'm going to Cancún for 8 days and 1 day I'm going to destine to go to Las Coloradas. More or less I will be arriving at the 3 pm to Valladolid
1-Where do you recommend lodging? Valladolid, Tizimin or Río Lagartos. To spend the whole afternoon there, to sleep, to visit the reddish ones calmly and the following day at noon to return to Cancun.
2-If I had to choose between Las Coloradas and Holbox; What do you think is more beautiful? I can not go to both. I'm going with my 8 daughter for years.
I will greatly appreciate your response
Hi, Raul,
1-Valladolid seems to me the most beautiful city to visit at urban level, but if your idea is to go to Las Coloradas, you can stay in Rio Lagartos, which is a very quiet town, and much closer. You have the beach of San Felipe, a good place to go with your daughter too: quiet beach and fresh fish at a good price 🙂 Before arriving at Rio Lagartos you can stop to visit Valladolid, so you can see everything.
2-Holbox has a sea as a pool, ideal to go with children. It is really beautiful, falls in love. Maybe Holbox, but follow your instinct Raúl, sure you're right, because both are great destinations.
I wish you a fantastic vacation!
Thank you very much for your answer.
One last question, please.
Since I will arrive at Rio Lagartos I think the 4 pm and I will sleep there. At what time will it be better to go to Las Coloradas? in the afternoon at the 4 pm or the next day in the morning.
I go exclusively because my daughter wants to see the pink sea, she loves everything that is pink.
Many greetings
Raúl, how beautiful your girl 🙂 I can see you taking the thousand photos that you will be asked in Las Coloradas, how nice!
Calculate hour and a half of driving between Valladolid and Rio Lagartos, in fact the detour to Las Coloradas you find it a little before arriving at Rio Lagartos. I think it's a good plan to go at sunset, in summer time it's about 19 hours, so it gives you plenty of time. The colors, if the sunset is dismissed, are divine. The doubts that are needed, here we are.
Enjoy your treasure.
Thank you very much Sandra. I will be the August 4 in those directions.
Hello Sandra,
in two weeks I go to Holbox, to stay a few days, and we want to visit Las Coloradas, I see that by road it is a long time, I was wondering if there is the possibility of doing this path by the sea. Will it be advisable?
so I would like to know what is the best time to visit the Colorado, will be at dawn?
Thank you
Hello Josef, the distance between Holbox and Las Coloradas by boat is considerable, about 2 hours and a half long. This means paying a lot for the gasoline issue, but there are certainly fishermen with whom you can negotiate, although it is something that is not offered by Holbox agencies. Another thing you can do that is wonderful is to go to El Cuyo, an hour and a half by road. From El Cuyo, a wonderful coastal town, there is a dirt road that leads to Las Coloradas, a chulada where you will see flamingos and salt flats along the way, as well as desert beaches (it is an hour's walk). The road is not very well known, if you have a better car, it is dirt.
Look where you look, round trip from Holbox to Las Coloradas in one day is long, it takes a whole day. If you can sleep in El Cuyo is another option too, there are accommodations and the place is different.
The good thing about dawn in Las Coloradas is that you will be alone, personally the lights of the sunset I like more, but both hours are the best.
You have nothing left to come, enjoy a lot!
Hello, I do not know if you can help me, I have a question, about how much is spent in pure public passage from Cancun to Las Coloradas? Per person. And more or less a route. I hope you can guide me. Thank you
Hello Edgar, from Cancun you must go to Tizimin, let me tell you the price and schedules on Wednesday, that there are not many. From Tizimin to Las Coloradas you can go by bus with Nordeste (47 street, between the 48 and 50): 50 pesos per person, 10: 30 and 13.10 schedules. The last Northeast bus that leaves from Las Coloradas back to Tizimin is at 15 hours. The combinations are not very good, really. Another possibility is to go in combi, which leave very close to the Northeast terminal, the passage is 70 pesos per person. But collective or private taxi service to Las Coloradas, another option. From Tizimin to Las Coloradas, put in less than an hour.
Wednesday I confirm you passage and time Cancun-Tizimín, to see if you can do everything in one day.
Regards,
Hi, I plan to go to PDC, possibly Tulum Bacalar and definitely Holbox. I will have a car. I would like to add a visit to Las Coloradas. Which way do you recommend I take? Should I do it before Holbox? Thanks for your help
Hello Lydia,
Ugh, it depends a lot on the plan and where you're from. From Las Coloradas to Holbox by car you have about 3 hours. If you left Tulum, I would go to Las Coloradas, which is 3 hours and a half, via Valladolid-Tizimin, and then Holbox. If you want to stay to sleep in the area of Las Coloradas you have options, so as not to do the other 3 hours towards Holbox de Jerón.
If in the end it is another plan you tell me and I try to help you.
Regards,
Hello Sandra, do you know if there is a way to get to Las Coloradas by boat from Holbox? To go and return the same day.
Hello Annie, it's too far to go by boat. I asked in Holbox less than two months ago to go by boat to El Cuyo, which is closer than Las Coloradas, and it was about three hours. It is not a service they offer. By land is the best way to go from Holbox to Las Coloradas.
Best regards,
Hi Sandra, I'm going from Mérida to Las Coloradas, I'm reading that before arriving to Río Lagartos there is a detour to the Colorado ones, my question is yes I'm going by tour bus I can get to Las Coloradas or there is still a boat to take and if it is so what does it cost, and another question at what time do you recommend leaving Mérida for the red ones and where can I eat?
Hello Annie, sorry I was disconnected. You must take a bus to Tizimin, about 2 hours and a half of journey. From Tizimin to Las Coloradas, another bus or bus, 30 minutes. Remember that the last one back from Las Coloradas is 15, so I recommend you leave early.
In Las Coloradas there is not much choice to eat, but you find. But in Tizimin you have more options.
Best regards, I hope the answer is not late.
Hello Sandra 'I am in Isla Mujeres and I want to go to Valladolid, then in the morning of the next day I go to Rio Lagartos and then go to Mérida. I would like to know if you are so kind, how could I get to Mérida from Rio Lagartos or Tizimin by bus, the price and if you know how long it lasts. Thank you very much, I thank you from my heart.
Hello India, the best option is to leave Rio Lagartos to Tizimín in a bus or bus, leave every hour in the morning, no problem, and costs about 50 pesos and is half an hour long. From Tizimín another transport by bus to Mérida, which is 2 hours and a half, and price I do not know exact but walks around the 150 pesos at the most. The area is well combined in transport.
Oh, from Valladolid take a bus or bus to Tizimin, from here to Rio Lagartos.
Enjoy your trip 🙂
Hello Sandra, I would like to know if you could help me, I would like to go to Las Coloradas, to the mountains of salt and to see the Flamingos. I would like to know if they charge something, and how to get to where the Flamingos are, thank you very much
Hello María Fernanda, if you go with your own vehicle you can enter freely through the locks of the salt flats, there you will see the flamingos on dirt roads. On weekends, with the increase of visitors, they put a rope as stop and make you pay for the use of the road (there is a certain controversy with that). If you do not go in your own car there are boys with their bikes that take you to the flamenco salinas, I do not know the prices to guide you.
From Rio Lagartos you can also hire excursions to see flamingos by the mangrove, beautiful.
Best regards,
Hi Sandra, if I go by car, is it possible to get to the Colorado ones on our own and see the pink sea or is it more advisable to take a tour? I'm from Valladolid and I'm interested in seeing the pink sea
Hi Rebecca, better in your own car. You can get into the car by the roads of the salt mine, where the pink sea is. It will be easy to see the detour. The salt workers will warn you not to get in the water, only this restriction. It is very salty and can damage your skin and contaminate the water. The flamingos are seen in the pink waters.
Enjoy a lot 🙂
Thank you very much for the information, I only have one question to get to the red ones is it necessary to get to the river lizards or is the deviation before?
For nothing Rebecca, a pleasure.
You will see the detour before Río Lagartos, a few kilometers before, it is well signposted.
Best regards,
Hello Sandra.
I have planned to arrive at the 20 from March to Merida and in the afternoon on the way to Cancun I want to visit the Colorado ones, but I can not locate the cost of the entrance to the reserve of the Biosphere of Ría Lagartos.
The idea is to travel by bus from Merida to tizimin and from there taxi and tizimin travel to Cancun.
Hello paola,
If you go to Las Coloradas you should not pay entrance to the Reserve. It is a good idea to take a taxi to Las Coloradas, the taxi driver is waiting for you and you return to Tizimin. You can be charged around 500 pesos the tour by private taxi. I leave the phone number of the Northeast bus terminal in Tizimin to check schedules for Cancun, but you must go to ADO to Valladolid and then to Cancun: 863 30 34
Best regards,
Hello Sandra, I hope you can help me. I plan to go in February 6 days to Cancun, the idea is to rent a van and move on my own, planned and I would love to know the red, holbox, chichen itza and why not valladolid, this to investigate this the same course, On the other hand it is to know Tulum Playa del Carmen, Bacalar and Majahual.
As you can help me to plot the best route in times, and seeing the maps of the coloradas to holbox is basically to return to Cancun.
Thanks and I hope you help me.

Best regards,
Hello Sandra. Is it possible to travel from Holbox to Colorado by public transport? Thanks for the info
Hello Natalia,
You must take the bus from Chiquilá (the port where you take the ferry to Holbox) and get to Tizimin, there is no direct to Las Coloradas. From Tizimin to Las Coloradas you can take a collective taxi (shared by 4, use it a lot, 70 pesos) or bus from the Northeast (50 pesos) or buses. All come out in the same area more or less, easy to ask once you get the schedules and which leaves. From Holbox / Chiquilá I do not know the schedules, but there are not many towards Tizimin.
Good trip,
HELLO, DO YOU KNOW HOW TO ARRIVE AT RO DE LAGARTOS FROM PUERTO PROGRESO, IS THERE DIRECT TRANSPORTATION OR DO I HAVE TO RETURN TO MERIDA? REGARDS
Hi Miguel,
It is quite complicated to go from Progreso, better return to Merida.
Regards,
Hello, I will be in Mérida for several days and I plan to move to Valladolid. Do you know how cenotes are inside the city? and can you tell me what is the best time to visit the Colorado? where the pink color of the water is more appreciated ... I'm going to especially see that :), on the other hand I do not know if you can guide me in relation to the puuc route, I do not go with a car I will stay for several days in Merida and I want to do this tour, my question is if I can do it for me account taking a truck, or if there is a service that connects each place where the circuit is formed, or it is better to rent a car ... or I'm taking a trip
Hello Sonia,
Both Merida and Valladolid have cenotes inside the city, those of Mérida have not visited them. Those of Valladolid, without doubt are worth it, both the Zací and the Oxman that you have very close. https://www.elcaminomascorto.es/cenote-oxman-el-tesoro-de-la-hacienda-san-lorenzo/
I leave you the information of the Puuc Route: https://www.elcaminomascorto.es/que-ver-y-como-hacer-la-ruta-puuc/
Las Coloradas at sunrise or sunset, to see the different tonalities that are taking. At the zenith of the sun the color is also very intense.
Greetings and have an excellent trip,
Good day, there is another way to go to the beach of Carmen or just go to Valladolid from there to Tizimin and the Colorado, I understood that there was a route from Playa del Carmen to the Colorado without going to Valladolid, and also the zone of ek balam what distance there are to the red ones I plan to do it the same day in rented car a thousand thanks
Hi Daniel,
From Playa to Las Coloradas about 3 hours and 15 minutes per way. You must go through Valladolid if you go by the fastest route, but you do not need to enter Valladolid, you go by the peripheral, you will see it as Río Lagartos or Tizimin. From Ek Balam to Las Coloradas there are about 100 kilometers, it takes an hour and a half.

Greetings and good trip,
Hello, I will be in Merida, from there I want to go to Cancun, but before I wanted to get to the Colorado, I think it's better to arrive before, I would like to go from Las Coloradas to Holbox and from there finally to Cancun, you think it's the best route ? Do you know if it is complicated to go from Tizimin to Chiquila? Thank you!!!!!!
Hello Karim,
As you say, I would go from Mérida to Tizimín, there is a direct bus from Northeast. From Tizimín it is easy to go to Las Coloradas, and it is also easy to go to Chiquilá. In the same day, the whole journey is very fair. You can sleep in Tizimín or Río Lagartos, in the mornings there is more transportation to Chiquilá (I think the last one from Northeast of Tizimin to Chiquilá goes to the 14: 15).
Have an excellent trip,
What do you recommend more feasible? ... Go from Holbox to Isla Mujeres or go from Holbox to Cancun and from there to Isla Mujeres? Speaking in terms of ease, speed and cost too.
Thanks in advance.
Hi Rachel,
Transportation from Holbox goes through Cancun, yes or yes. If you go by public transport you will be dropped off at the bus terminal in Cancun, the transfers also go through Cancun. The ferry to Isla Mujeres you take from the Cancun area, I leave you the options: https://www.elcaminomascorto.es/ferry-a-isla-mujeres/
You can arrive in a perfectly smooth day to Isla Mujeres.
Best regards,
Hola!
I have planned to go to the Colorado, I will stay in the river village lizard, how can I get to the red? I do not want to take the tour, I just want to go to where the salt is, I would go by public transport 🙂
thanks!
Hello Jimena, I am not clear about the order of your route, I pass the information to see if I understood you.
You must get to Tizimin, I do not know where you will come from. From Tizimín collect buses to Las Coloradas 47 street with the 48 (70 pesos) Also leaves the Northeast truck to the 10: 30, to the 13: 30. From Tizimín there is also bus and collective to Río Lagartos, in case you go there first. Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas are connected by buses, but I do not know schedules.
I hope you serve, best regards.
Hi, I want to go to Las Coloradas leaving Mérida by public transport, do you know how to do it?
Incidentally this incredible your Post 🙂
Hello Miroslava, thanks for the comment.
From Mérida it is best to take the bus from the Nordeste company to Tizimin, I do not remember schedules, one leaves early at the 7. The journey is 2 hours, from Tizimin collective bus, bus or taxi to Las Coloradas, according to your convenience. They come very close to the stop.
Enjoy a lot,
How much is the cost of Marisa to Tizimín and the combi or taxi from Tizimín to the coloradas xfas
Hi Lenardo, the cost from Merida to Tizimin is about 180 pesos per truck from Northeast, and the Tizimin to Las Coloradas combi is about 70 pesos. You have the information with some schedules in the article, in case you want to expand.
Good trip,
Hello Sandra! I plan to go in May to Las Coloradas and Rio Lagartos, departing from Valladolid. In a day can I visit them without so much haste and return to Valladolid? Or the other option that I plan is to leave Valladolid, go to the Coloradas, Rio Lagartos and from there go to Chiquilá and hope to arrive in the afternoon to Holbox, will the time be too tight?
Thank you!!!
Hello Lucia, I understand that you are going by bus, right? If you can do it if you leave early and according to if you want to make the excursion in Rio Lagartos by the mangrove by boat, which takes about three hours. I do not know when Chiquila is the last bus or bus that leaves from Tizimin, maybe it does not give you time. Think that from the 16 in the afternoon are the last buses that depart. I will pass the contact of a taxi driver you trust if you want to contact him to make you prices.
Best regards,
Hello sandra how is the road between Valladolid to Las Coloradas I plan to stay at Rio Largtos and then go to Las Coloradas
Hello Marcos, that road is good, the journey has no loss. I love that area, enjoy it a lot?
Hello Sandra,
I am planning to go from Merida to Mahahual and back to get to Bacalar, what is the easiest bus way ?? Bacalar is near Manual, right?
Hello Ismael,
Surely by bus the easiest is Mérida-Bacalar and then Mahahual, which is an hour and a half from Bacalar. Anyway I leave the ADO website so that you can search for alternatives and plan your trip well with schedules and dates. https://www.ado.com.mx/ado2/#/
Have an excellent trip, best regards.
Hi Sandra, how can I help you? Can I help you? I'll stay at Playa del Carmen but I want to visit Holbox and Las Coloradas the same day, what would be the best route and approximate costs?
Hi Daniel,
You can get to Las Coloradas first (3 hours), then go to Holbox (2 hours 40 minutes) and return to 1 hour and 50 minutes to Playa. I think it's a lot in a day, if you are a little far from Holbox de Las Coloradas, can not you stay a night out and visit the place more calmly? So that you can make yourself itineraries and value, I recommend you google maps, insurance helps you in your plan. For Holbox costs I leave you http://goo.gl/4sgPUJ. The total costs I do not know how much Daniel would be.
Let's see what plan you ride, kind regards.
Hi Sandra, good morning, some questions 🙂 what transport I can take from Mérida Yucatán to Tizimin and from Tizimin to Las Coloradas. Since I want to know the red ones. And how can I get to Playa del Carmen?
You could provide schedules and costs for them, please.
Thank you very much
Hello marlen, I do not have all the information you ask me, I break you down: from Mérida to Tizimin in the Northeast bus (less than 200 pesos, I do not know the timetables). From Las Coloradas to Playa del Carmen you must go through Tizimin, it is the best option. I found this article: https://www.rome2rio.com/es/s/Playa-del-Carmen/Las-Coloradas-Yucat%C3%A1n-M%C3%A9xico
I hope this puzzle serves you.
Good way Marlen,
I will be 1 night in Chichén for the light show and the next day very early I would like to go out to the Coloradas and be a few hours later to go to Cancun, where I have booked the hotel, which way I should go and the time of travel and above all road conditions and safety, regards
Sorry I have to add that I'm going on a rental car, so the question of the routes, the state of the roads and the safety of them, I have only traveled on the highway from Merida to Cancun and vice versa
Hello, because they are easy routes, for good roads: from Chichén to Las Coloradas it calculates about two hours a little more. You do not have to take the fee, go by free to Valladolid and from there take the road to Rio Lagartos. Well indicated From Las Coloradas to Cancún, calculate three hours taking the quota from Valladolid. There is no loss in the journey, safety and condition of the roads is good. If you have the Google Maps application on your cell phone, you can use it to support you in the instructions it gives you.
Warm greetings and good path,
Sorry Sandra, I put my doubts in response to other comments, better post a new comment: I see that to go from Las Coloradas to Hol Box on the same day I have to be at the latest to the 2: 00 PM in Tizimin. So, I update my questions:
1. What is the price of the Mérida - Tizimin ticket and if you know the earliest time of departure and travel time, since the buses in the northeast do not have a website?
2. What is the price of the combi from Tizimin to Las Coloradas, frequency and travel time.
I plan just to take pictures and get out of there as soon as possible to head to Hol Box. What is the price of the Tizimin - Chiquilá journey and how long is it?
From Chiquilá to Hol Box I know about the ferry.
Finally, I'm pretty tight of money and time ... I like what I see of Las Coloradas but a friend who has made several trips to the Riviera tells me that it only seems like a nice destination, but one that only goes to take the photo of the memory and follow ... I see that this photo would take me a lot of time from my logistics and I am afraid not to be able to fulfill my idea of leaving Mérida, going to Las Coloradas and arriving at Hol Box the same day. Do you think I can achieve it? Do you think it's worth the trot just for my idea of the photo in Las Coloradas?
Thank you!!!!!
Hello Janette,
1- It's about 200 weights, more or less. The schedule I do not know, there are some direct and others with stops, you agree direct. One sure comes out early on the 7, another memory on the 11, and they should have a more direct pair.
2- From Tizimín depart buses from 47 street with the 48 (70 pesos) Also the Northeast truck departs at 10: 30, at 13: 30. On the way back from Las Coloradas to Tizimín, the last bus departs at 15 hours. (50 pesos the journey). About half an hour long it takes.
3- I think a lot like your friend, that landscape is very sweet to take the photo, exactly that made it fashionable: the photo with the pink back. If you leave early you can do it, but if your idea is Holbox and spend time there, which is precious, I would put it as a priority. From Tizimin combis leave to Chiquilá as well. You could arrive early, look at the combinations in Tizimín and decide. The good thing is that in Tizimn the Northeast station and combis are very close. That journey from Tizimin to Chiquila is about two hours or so.
If there was anything left, you tell me that I got a little bit of comments.
Have a good trip Janette.
Hello Sandra! I would like to know if you can help me please, I go with a friend to visit this area the first of August, we are seeing how to make our route, we fly to Cancun and from there we go to Holbox, in a rental car, we want to sleep two days there, then we want to go to Las Coloradas to visit and then continue with the tour until we reach Merida (we still do not know what to do at intermediate points, in total we will be 6 days). What would your recommendation be?
Hi Lourdes,
Among those points that you mention, I would not miss Ek Balam, the cenotes of Yalcoba, Valladolid, Chichén, Izamal, haciendas, the Rio Lagartos Reserve or Celestún and some visits to Mayan communities with activities with them, in Ek Balam or Yaxunah. Everything you find in the blog. If you want us to design the complete trip with stops, visits and activities in communities, we will gladly talk and give you a budget of the circuit tailored to your interests.
A traveling hug,
Hello Sandra!
I loved your blog and your kindness. I'm going from Mexico City and I want to know Las Coloradas. I would also like to know Holbox, since I read that there is closeness. The initial plan was to travel to Mérida, visit Mérida, Las Coloradas and maybe Valladolid. But I prefer, now, to know Las Coloradas (which is the purpose of the trip) and Holbox. My question is, where do you recommend traveling for this tour to Merida or Cancun? I go in September for 4 days and I have the possibility of renting a car, if this facilitates the trip. I can also fly in a simple flight to Mérida or Cancún and return in a simple trip (not round) from one of these two points. The only drawback would be, if I rent the car, I must return to the same airport. I hope you can help me. Thank you.
Hello Alejandra, sorry for the delay, I'm half vacationing.
Cancun is closer to Las Coloradas and Holbox. You must bear in mind that if you rent a car in Cancun and leave it in Mérida you must pay more or less 100 dollars. If it is in the same airport there is no extra payment. I hope I have clarified your doubts. Las Coloradas and Holbox is a beautiful trip.
Best regards,
Sandra, excellent Blog! I see that you respond very kindly to all; I would like to ask for your help to know how I could take a route from Cancun to Las Coloradas, my idea is to get to Cancun, from there to Valladolid to visit Chichen Itza and a nearby cenote, then go to Tizimin and take the combi you mention to the red ones, there to stay in river lizards or return to tizimin and from there to stay to depart the next day to chiquila; I would like to know if there is any transport route for my way from Cancun to Valladolid and I would appreciate knowing if there are taxis that cover this route besides the approximate cost; another question in chiquila a holbox as is the transport? Beforehand thank you very much!
Hi Miguel, from Cancun it is easy to get to Valladolid in ADO. I leave you a contact of a taxi driver of confidence in Valladolid with which you can contact. https://www.tripadvisor.com.mx/Attraction_Review-g499453-d12291697-Reviews-Maya_Adventure_Taxi_Tours-Valladolid_Yucatan_Peninsula.html
I do not know excatos prices, from Tizimin I think they charge you over the 600 pesos round trip to Las Coloradas. If you stay in Rio Lagartos I recommend the boat trip through the mangrove, it is very nice.
To go from Tizimin to Holbox you can take bus or bus. I leave the entrance to Holbox where you can find the information to complete your trip on the ferry and schedules: https://www.elcaminomascorto.es/holbox-isla-visitar-excursiones/
I hope you enjoy the destination a lot, it is a great tour that you are going to do.
Any doubt I try to support you. Regards,
Sandra hello. I hope you find yourself well and I hope you can help me thanks
I will go to Merida on 17 from August to 20 I want to know Las coloradas Holbox bacalar and tulum
The 17 arrived at the 10. I want to know which route you recommend everything would be by bus, combi or collective taxi.
I await your quick reply Carlos
Hi Carlos, sorry I'm on a trip.
I lack the information on where you are going, which is basic, but roughly according to your stops I would go from Mérida to Bacalar and then I would go up to Tulum, and via Valladolid to Holbox, and Las Coloradas.
Tailor-made itineraries we also do, I give you our information in case you are interested: https://www.elcaminomascorto.es/planifica-con-nosotros-tu-viaje-a-tierras-mayas/
Have an excellent trip?
Hello, good evening Sandra, I apologize, I would like to ask for recommendations to put together a travel itinerary. 30 day arrived in December to Puerto Progreso and I left the 1 day in January to Merida until the 3 in January. I would like to ask you for recommendations of places to visit at each stop that do not require so much time to arrive. Thank you and I am aware of your recommendations. 🙂
Hello Dinorah, happy to help you with the itinerary. The mail arrived, now I answer you in this way privately. Sure you have an excellent trip. I'm talking to you right now 🙂
Hello Sandra, I have been following your blog for a while and I love it! I'm thinking of visiting Holbox, Lagunas Coloradas and El Cuyo. What would be the most efficient way to do it? We're going to go by car (but not 4 × 4). Do you know how much the cost of the boat between Cuyo and Holbox could be? If I understand well, there is a dirt road between El Cuyo and Las Colorados. I have also read that there is a coastal path between El Cuyo and Chiquilá, but this stretch seems more inaccessible. You have experience?
My other question will be about the situation in Holbox. I have heard about the sanitary problems of the island. I really want to visit, but I feel something wrong to participate in damaging a place that currently has so many problems caused by tourism. I also go with a three-year-old daughter, so her health is a priority since we got a strong infection in Mexico once.
regards
Jitka
Hi Jitka, it's good that the blog serves you, has my help to answer questions.
1-From Holbox to El Cuyo you must go by car, a little over an hour's walk. By sea it is very far and the boat trip is very expensive, it is not something that they offer. 2-El Cuyo and Las Coloradas are linked by a beautiful sandy road: they are 32 kilometers, the 3 kilometers closest to El Cuyo are very narrow (only one car passes) and with many holes, it can be done, but it is heavy. Another thing is that if the tide went up a lot, the road becomes blurred, the sea covers it in some stretch. This will only be seen on the road, those of El Cuyo, even if you ask, maybe they do not know why they do not use it. I've done it several times, it's beautiful, but it has these difficulties. The first 20 kilometers from Las Coloradas to El Cuyo is a good road of compacted sand. 3-This year they have been much better in Holbox, they solved the water problem. The ideal beach for your little girl because it is a very calm sea. If I know something these days that says otherwise I'll let you know. El Cuyo, for example, is a much less exploited place, a beautiful beach without almost tourism.
I hope you get the information, here you have me, you know.
Best regards.
Thank you very much for all the information!
Hello the last time I went to Coloradas they had extracted the salt and they were no longer pink. I want to go back to Easter. You know what dates they extract the salt to be able to program me. Thank you in advance and good blog
Hello Jonathan, the last time they took her out in October, so at Easter you'll see her pink. They extract it more or less once a year, so it'll be good pink on those dates. Enjoy Las Coloradas again 🙂
Hello good day! I will be visiting the area in 16 days approximately.
Will I appreciate the color pink?
On the other hand I would like to consult you if it is convenient and safe to travel by car along the route. Is it dangerous because of security issues? The conditions of the roads is good?
Taking into account these issues, I should go to the Colorado from Valladolid or from Cancun?
It is convenient to go by car or tour?
From already thank you very much.
I wait your answer.
Hello Federico, yes you can appreciate the pink 🙂 Regarding your other doubts: the road is safe to do it by car, either from Cancun or from Valladolid. From Cancun the day is a little long, so I recommend hiking if you want to go back and forth. From Valladolid it is much lighter in time to drive yourself, and you leave a bit of the most tourist area, I find it interesting to sleep in Valladolid. You can also stay in Rio Lagartos or the same Coloradas. I hope your answer helps me, anything I try to support you.
Good way,
Hello Sandra at the end of the month I visit Mérida and I want to know Las Coloradas and Celestun, could you recommend some agency to do these tours and also the approximate cost of each one that helps us a lot to know also the cost and the days that we must spend in Mérida since later we will move to Valladolid Thank you
Hello Jessica, for you to organize I recommend you to do Celestún from Mérida and Las Coloradas much better from Valladolid. I leave other proposals for the surroundings of Merida if you want to live other nearby places: https://www.elcaminomascorto.es/peninsula-yucatan/las-9-mejores-visitas-alrededor-de-merida/ Agencies in Mérida I am not an expert and I can not advise you in particular, the tours to Celestún cost between the 1000 and 2000 pesos per person, depending on the service and companies. I have the contact of driver or taxi driver who takes excursions, I can pass your contact by mail to you to quote if you are interested, depending on the number of people you get a good price. You already tell me.
That you have a great vacation, any other doubt you write to me.
HELLO!! I WILL GO WITH MY FAMILY NOW IN NOVEMBER, YOU KNOW IF YOU CAN APPRECIATE THE PINK COLOR FOR THESE DATES? Will there be any way to call or investigate a few days before we go? WE HAVE MANY WISH TO KNOW BUT WE DON'T WANT TO RISK THAT IN THOSE DATES WE WILL NOT SEE THAT BEAUTIFUL COLOR.
Hello Maya, a few days before you write to me and I confirm you. We have friendship and direct contact with people who guide in Las Coloradas, so I can inform you first hand. I anticipate that there will be no problem for those dates, but I confirm before.
Best regards, I wish you a great trip to the whole family 🙂
Hello Sandra…
You help me with my tour, I booked two nights in Valladolid, the first day I want it to tour the town of Valladolid and its cenotes, the second I want it to visit Las Coloradas ... the reservation was fine or you recommend me change one night and book in Rio Lizards? To not have such tight times and enjoy more time in Las Coloradas, because what I read is that at 3 pm I have to return to Valladolid.
Or I book in Rio Lagartos and in the afternoon I return to Mérida, which is my starting point.
Thank you!!!
Hi Ana Belén, I try to help you, of course 🙂
The truth is that the two options you handle are fine. Valladolid has the comfort that in the evening there is much more to do and wander around, in Río Lagartos (beautiful sunset) from the evening onwards they have dinner and little else (well, they do a tour to see the crocodiles at night). So it's kind of your preference. As you know, transportation to Las Coloradas is complicated, from Valladolid you must go through Tizimín and vice versa. In the end it is more time waiting for transport than in places. las Coloradas if it is only to see the pink lagoon it is a short time there. I don't know if I clarified something for you or I think you are more indecisive?
If you are interested, the contact of a trusted person in Valladolid who guides through cenotes and Las Coloradas, has good prices, to optimize and do several things in one day.
Any doubt we continue in it. Best regards,
Hello Sandra! Do you know any company that does the Lagartos and Las Coloradas river tour from Valladolid round trip? I have seen them from Cancun but not from Valladolid 🙁 can you help me? Thank you in advance! 🙂
Of course yes, I send you an email with information from someone you trust and a very good professional, it also has good prices.
Have a good trip, good road 🙂
Good morning,
We have a private car and we want to go from Valladolid to Las Coloradas to spend the day. We would like to know if you recommend visiting the area on our own or with a guide:
- On our own: Could you propose a route to do during the day? We like the beach but also visit different places.
- Guide: Could you provide us with a contact?
Thank you,
Good morning Nerea, the theme in Las Coloradas is that access to a part of the pink lagoon is mandatory with a guide, and it is only 50 pesos per person. I pass you the contact of Rocío, certified nature guide: 986 107 3306. She can wait for you and give the service. You can visit the other on your own. There are a couple of entrances on the left to the beach, one of them is Cancunito, the best known. Likewise, the Gaviotas restaurant to eat in Las Coloradas is fine. The town's beach is beautiful, with the fishing boats.
In Río Lagartos for boat rides on the estuary is great. With that you do a full day, with a cenote in the Yalcobá area if the day reaches you (search the cenotes blog like Xcanahaltun, Sac Aua O Palomitas).
I hope it serves you, Rocío can recommend more things in the area.
In fact all this week I am in Las Coloradas in the afternoon taking a course.
Greetings and good way,
Sandra, good afternoon! Thank you very much for your blog and your collaboration! I wanted to ask you about the combis that leave from Tizimín to Las Coloradas: from what I understand, the earliest outbound departure is at 10:30, arriving at Las Coloradas at approximately 11am and the last one back is at 15pm. In those 4 hours, did I manage to make the excursion through Las Coloradas?
Ignacio, sorry that we have had problems with the server and I have not been able to answer you: The hours are 10 in the morning, 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm, but then there are taxis that come and go. It varies sometimes, but that's where they go. In 4 hours enough, yes?
