Dzibanché is a Mayan word meaning "writing on wood" or "place where you write on wood”, Alluding to the wooden lintel that is still preserved in Building VI of the Dzibanché Group.
There are many treasures that have been found in Dzibanché, from offerings in burial chambers, some precious hieroglyphic steps, lintels with hieroglyphics, mortuary objects, remains of polychromies in bas-relief murals, pieces of jade.
A city with a lot of information to contribute to the Mayan world thanks to the quantity of graphic pieces and Mayan writings found. Footprints of our history, exciting.
With the new discoveries, the possibility that the Kaan lineage (from proto-maya KaaN meaning snake), one of the most illustrious surnames of the Mayan civilization, settled here between 450 and 620 AD, being Dzibanché the capital of the Kaan state during some period of time in the Early Classic, to then get to govern Calakmul, one of the largest Mayan cities of the Classic.

Greetings, excellent trip.
Hello! Between Bacalar and Calakmul we would like to stop to visit 1 (or 2 maximum) Mayan ruins. Which would you recommend? We travel with a 3-year-old girl and we prioritize that it does not involve a major detour from the road, that there is little influx of people, that it is in a beautiful place with a jungle around it and if there are animals (monkeys, etc...) great. We thought about Becan. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Hello Laia, in addition to Becán, Kohunlich is the one that I would recommend. Going to Kohunlich takes you 16 more kilometers.
Have a very good trip
